PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the prestigious trophy on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the net early on.

However, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen years.
