The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
